Founders of Black History Month
On November 8, 2007, the Cincinnati Museum Center Board of Trustees named Dr. John E.
Fleming Director Emeritus in honor of his contributions to the Center as Vice President of
Museums. The Board also established two endowment funds in his name.
For his dedication and support of the CMC Youth Program, the John E. Fleming Youth
Endowment Fund was established to ensure the youth of the Cincinnati continue to have
access to this exceptional educational opportunity. The John E. Fleming Annual Lecture was
also established to support an annual colloquium on contemporary issues of importance to
the community.
Dr. Fleming officially retired the end of September, 2007. A dinner was held in the Losantiville
Dinning Room in his honor. Doug McDonald, President of the Cincinnati Museum Center,
noted the numerous contributions Dr. Fleming has made to the museum and history
profession over his 28 years as director of national museums. Mr. McDonald presented Dr.
Fleming with a commissioned piece of art. Senator Eric Kearney announced that both the
Ohio House and Senate passed resolutions naming November 8, 2007 John E. Fleming Day.
Following the dinner, Dr. Fleming gave the fall Seminar on the City Lecture reflecting on his
career as a public historian.
Dr. Fleming has assumed the position of Executive Producer for a 12,000 sq. ft. traveling
exhibition on the “Imprint of African Americans on America.” Tavis Smiley conceived of the
project with Arts and Exhibitions International. “Tutankhamen, the Golden Age of the
Pharaohs” and “Titanic” are among the exhibitions developed by AEI.
