ASALH-Kiamsha Poetry Slam
|
Come join ASALH and Kiamsha and try out your slam poetry skills at a fun and friendly
event. The poetry slam will also include a peek into Kiamsha's Youth Day event, which
seeks to teach high school students about Black History.
A poetry slam is a spoken word contest between two or more individuals. The crowd
judges the event, usually by applause. The crowd favorite is the winner.
The rules for slam poetry are widely variable, but there are some basic guidelines:
- Poems must be original and must be performed by the composer.
- There is a set amount of time that each participant gets to read his/her poem.
- Either the crowd or a pre-determined, impartial panel of judges will decide the
winner.
There is usually a bracket-style advancement process, much like in NCAA basketball,
where the winners move on to face other winners until there are only two left. The final
round will determine the 2008 ASALH Poetry Slam Champion.
