Living Legacy Awards

In partnership with Farmers Insurance, Inc.
For the third year, The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) and Farmers Insurance are partnering to sponsor the Living Legacy Awards. The award was developed in support of the 2012 Black History theme, "Black Women in American History and Culture."
Since 2012, forty (40) women have been honored with the Living Legacy Award under this theme.

In 2013, it was decided to expand future awards to the unsung African American women and men across the country engaged in extraordinary work to improve communities, institutions, organizations and family life targeted to a field of service specifically for that year.
In 2014, the Living Legacy honorees will be educators in all fields of education and from many arenas. These include teachers, administrators, historians, academic writers, and trailblazers to and from institutions such as public, private and nontraditional primary and secondary schools, institutions of higher learning, government and community.
NOTE: NOMINATION DEADLINE EXTENDED! Nominations are being accepted for the 2014 Living Legacy Awards until
September 30 October 7, 2013.
Nomination submission must include:
- Two (2) page biography or resume on the Nominee (mandatory).
- Statement (100 words maximum) by the Nominator as to why this person is being nominated (mandatory).
- Press materials from newspapers, magazines, newsletters or online about the Nominee. (optional)
- Two (2) Letters of Recommendation for the Nominee from other individuals who support this nomination. (optional)
A maximum of ten (10) award recipients will be chosen from the nominations by a juried panel. The results will be announced by email, regular mail, and on the ASALH website no later than November 25, 2013.
The award recipients will be expected to attend the ASALH Annual Black History Month Luncheon in Washington DC, February 22, 2014 where they will be honored and presented with their award. Each honoree shall receive one complimentary luncheon ticket and one night accommodations at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel for out of town honorees will be provided. All other expenses (including travel to, from and while in Washington and meals) will be the responsibility of the award recipient.
The award will be presented during the ASALH Annual Black History Luncheon at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel which takes place from 12:30 - 3:30 pm. Honorees are also invited to join the Special Guest in the Holding Room that morning at 10:30 A.M. Luncheon tickets for family, friends and guests of the honorees are available for purchase and seating in a reserved area until February 7, 2014.
All decisions of the ASALH Awards Committee will be final. No monetary stipend of any kind will accompany this award. The honorees will be asked to sign a release to use their image in announcing the award to be included print, internet, radio and TV venues.

2014 Black History Month Luncheon & Featured Authors Event
Luncheon and Featured Authors Event with the theme "Civil Rights in America" will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014, 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 2660 Woodley Road NW, Washington, DC.
