Buffalo State College (SUNY)

Buffalo State College invites applications and
nominations for the position of Dean, School of
Education.

The position is expected to be filled by July 1, 2012.
The Woods-Beals Endowed Chair in Urban and Rural
Education; an award-winning Professional Development
School Consortium; a cutting-edge Literacy Center;
and five academic departments (Adult Education,
Career and Technical Education, Elementary Education
and Reading, Exceptional Education, Social and
Psychological Foundations); comprise the School of
Education. The school includes approximately 60 full-
time faculty, 1100 undergraduate students, and over
700 graduate students. An additional 800
undergraduate students and 350 graduate students
are enrolled in secondary education programs outside
the School of Education.

With secondary education programs housed primarily in
three other schools (Arts and Humanities; Natural
and Social Sciences; Professions), institution-wide
teacher education governance is handled by the Council
of Deans. The dean of the School of Education is
expected to play a leadership role on this body, and
contribute significantly to the institution’s interactions
with external accrediting and regulatory entities.

Responsibilities:
Chief academic and administrative officer for the School
of Education responsible for: providing academic
and intellectual leadership for curriculum, instruction,
assessment, and faculty development and evaluation;
providing leadership in planning, administrative
operations, and fundraising for the School of Education,
and serving as liaison to the State Education
Department on relevant teacher preparation issues.

Required Qualifications:
Earned doctorate from an accredited institution, with a
record of academic achievement sufficient for
appointment to the rank of full professor in a field of
inquiry represented within the School of Education.
Record of successful university leadership and academic
administrative experience that demonstrates: vision;
knowledge of trends and issues challenging the field of
education at the national, state and local levels;
commitment to recruit, advance, and retain a diverse
community of faculty, staff, and students; knowledge of
CAEP accreditation and program approval standards and
procedures; successful fundraising experience;
ability to work effectively with faculty across disciplines
in a collegial manner; knowledge of academic
program and curriculum development and assessment
theory and practice; a track record of effective faculty
and staff supervision; a successful record of fostering P-
16 educational partnerships and collaborative
research; a consistent record of education-related
community outreach work; and, effective interpersonal,
organizational, advocacy, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Contract and grant administration experience;
experience with leadership in professional education
organizations.
