The Living Legacy Awards, co-sponsored by ASALH and Farmers Insurance, honors the many unsung African Americans across the country engaged in extraordinary work to improve communities, institutions, organizations and family life. The Living Legacy honorees are men and women "educators" in all fields of education and from many arenas. These include teachers, administrators, historians, academic writers, and trailblazers from institutions such as public, private and non-traditional primary and secondary schools, institutions of higher learning, government and community organizations. The awards are presented annually at the ASALH Black History Month Luncheon.

Since 2012 over forty women and men have been honored.
