Washington, DC 20059
Workshop Framework: The Association for the Study of African
American Life and History (ASALH) teacher workshop will be
presented using a reality-based presentation that includes
demonstration teaching. The Workshop will incorporate the
participation of high schools and middle school students from
the Metropolitan Charlotte School Districts. The workshop will
address the needs and interests of secondary history teachers,
professors in teacher preparation programs, professors in
curriculum and instruction, historians and others interested in
the study of African American life and history.
Workshop Objective: The purpose of the workshop is to highlight
the impact of culturally responsive teaching that incorporates
the dimensions of African American culture and tenets of
identity development among African American middle and high
school students. The workshop will focus on presenting
culturally responsive teaching ideas and other instructional
information to middle and high school history teachers.
Participants will leave with strategies they can immediately
implement in general and special education environments.
These materials can be used to illuminate the history standards
(both state and national) to include African American
experiences and personal narratives.
The ASALH Website is a project of the ASALH Publication Committee, Daryl Michael Scott, Chair.
